Guinea is a tropical destination, so expect to encounter a marked dry and a wet season. Generally, tourists are advised to visit during the dry season which sees lower humidity and slightly lower temperatures – making it ideal for beach activities and sightseeing. Visit between December and May for the best weather. Flight prices should be cheap all year-round so make sure you get the best deal.

The capital of Guinea is one of Africa’s most cosmopolitan, elegant and relaxed cities – with beautiful coastline to the north and exotic natural attractions on its doorstep.
As the national capital, Conakry is studded with museums and galleries that will keep anyone occupied for a few days. Head to the National Museum to learn about the history of the slave trade and Guinean independence, see the Grand Mosque and the magnificent Palace of the People, or take a blissful stroll through the immaculately maintained botanical gardens which contain plants from all over the country.
Conakry is also a nightlife centre, and a fine city for foodies as well, bringing together some of the finest chefs in west Africa, and offering cuisine from around the world.
However, the true attraction of this destination lies outside the city proper. Take boat tours to idyllic atolls and relax on endless, unspoilt beaches like those at Île de Kassa. Take a trip to the spectacular caves at Kakimbon or an easy day trip to the fascinating city of Katikan with its gorgeous Islamic architecture.
It’s also easy to see some of Africa’s extraordinary wildlife while staying in Conakry. Expert guides will show you the lions and elephants of the Tinkisso River region, while superb hiking is to be had in the stunning Fouta Djalon highlands.
The coast around town is also not just about relaxing on soft white sands. There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy as well, from snorkelling and diving to kayaking, wind surfing and surfing the often lively waves which wash in from the Atlantic Ocean.
There are also cultural events to savour, such as the enchanting music of the Guinean people, and frequent football matches at the city’s National Stadium. With beaches, culture and natural beauty, few African destinations can match Conakry.
The easiest and most popular way to get around Conakry is by shared taxis. Simply stand by the road and hail the vehicles as they pass by shouting your destination. The drivers will always be on the look-out for fares. There are buses and mini-buses, but these are slower and less reliable. Some hotels may also offer to charter taxis for the duration of your stay, which is not expensive and can be extremely convenient.
The Conakry International Airport (CKY) is not far away from central Conakry or major coastal resorts, but there is no regular public transport servicing arrivals. Instead, the best way to get into town is via dedicated shuttle buses provided by the larger hotels. Check to see if your accommodation provides this service. If not, there are plenty of taxis, but be sure to negotiate a price before leaving.
