The largest city on the island of Crete, Heraklion is a perfect blend of ancient culture and contemporary city life. Book a flight to Heraklion to discover hidden gems beneath the city’s tough cosmopolitan exterior, which includes excellent architecture, delicious culinary delights and some of the most famous sites in antiquity.
Heraklion’s high season falls within July and August when the weather is warmest and the number of visitors rapidly increases. Many flock here to enjoy the various beaches and outdoor excursions, but expect prices to be much higher during this busy season. The months of May and June, as well as September and October, are ideal for visiting Heraklion, not only because the weather is pleasant without being overbearing, but because the region is much quieter. Also, as most of these months fall within school term times, this is the ideal time to book a cheap flight to Heraklion.
The Haraklion Summer Arts Festival takes place annually from July to September. Bringing together a variety of ballet, opera and theatre performances, many of which are internationally renowned, it is clear why this festival has become famous for its diversity. The performances take place in a number of outdoor theatres which are often set in some historic locations across the city. Some of the events are free, however, tickets need to be purchased for some.
During late March, locals descend on Heraklion to commemorate the 1821 Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire. This is another great time to travel to Heraklion to see soldiers take part in an impressive parade through the main streets.

The journey was good on the whole. We had bikes with us so the dedicated oversize luggage lane at PMI was welcome. The flight was great, staff friendly as always. The only thing that lets down the return flight is the immigration at BHX. The separate area used by Jet2 is far too slow, I think we queued there for over an hour compared to generally going straight through or a 5 minute wait with other operators in the main facility at BHX. I know you will say that it's the responsibility of the airport, Home Office etc, but you really need to apply pressure to get this sorted out.

Named after Nikos Kazantzakis, the local philosopher and writer, Heraklion International Airport is Greece’s second-busiest airport, serving around five million passengers per year. Located 5km (3 miles) east of Crete’s main city, Heraklion, the eastern end of its runway lies just a few metres from the island’s shoreline, making landings and take-offs an exciting experience for first-time visitors.
A small but busy airport, most travellers taking flights to Heraklion International will see the airport briefly as they move on to other parts of Crete. The airport will cease to exist in the near future as a brand new airport, currently being built in Kastelli Pediados, is scheduled for completion in 2015.
As Heraklion International shares its space with a military base taking photographs or videos of the exterior of the airport, particularly its airfield, is prohibited.
Queues sometimes lead out the doors when it’s busy. This can prove unpleasant when it’s hot, so keep some drinks and sun-block handy if you’re heading to Crete in summer.
