When I was going to board, one of the staff members told me that I could not board with my passport bag because it was tree items and I would need to check a bag. This was so stupid ! The bag was small. So I had to put my things in my pockets, put the funny bag inside the other bag. Then go throw it. Then in the plane put everything back again in my funny bag.

The second-largest city in the Bluegrass state of Kentucky, Lexington is often referred to as the ‘Horse Capital of the World’. Indeed, the horse industry remains an integral part of the city’s culture, with a wealth of horse farms contained within the vicinity. The most famous of these is undoubtedly the Kentucky Horse Park, which plays host to the annual Kentucky Three Day Event. Located just outside the city, the Kentucky Horse Park is set in picturesque surroundings and boasts a number of excellent walking trails, in addition to a couple of interesting museums.
As one of the wealthiest cities in the state, Lexington has a number of exclusive neighbourhoods where the streets are lined with multi-million dollar homes. The shopping scene in Lexington reflects the city’s wealthy status, with many of the stores here belonging in the upmarket bracket, particularly those located in Victorian Square in the delightful and historic city centre area. Lexington also has a vibrant youth culture, no doubt due to the University of Kentucky being located in the city centre. The main campus area which borders the Downtown region is home to a fascinating selection of speciality retail stores and independently owned restaurants, many of which serve famous Kentucky food staples such as the Hot Brown sandwich, burgoo stew and bourbon balls.
The central area of the city is fairly compact and therefore can be comfortably navigated on foot. However, there are free trolley services in operation at certain times of the day which link the centre with the University of Kentucky. Regular bus services operate throughout the wider area of the city up until approximately 11pm. Taxis should be booked in advance as they cannot always be hailed in the street.
Located approximately 4 miles (6 km) from the city centre, Blue Grass Airport (LEX) is the nearest commercial air terminal to Lexington, although it only operates regional flights. There are a number of transportation options to reach the city from the airport, the most popular being the regular express bus service which runs until early evening. In addition, taxis are numerous and many of the major hotels offer private shuttle services.
Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport (LEX) has a quaint name, that goes along with the proud history of the area. Southern hospitality is the order of the day in the friendly and efficient service of the airport, located just 6.5km (4 miles) outside of the city.
A small regional airport, you won’t find flights to Blue Grass Airport from international destinations; instead, you can choose from commuter flights operating to and from Chicago, Atlanta and Houston.
Once inside, however, the spacious and attractive interior quickly makes you forget its lack of bells and whistles. Processing just over a million passengers a year, the airport is a warm and welcoming gateway to the charms of Kentucky – whether you come for the Derby, or just for a taste of bourbon.
