Waited about 90 minutes in passport control in Newark because there were only 2 gates open for much of the time with several hundred people in the line.

Montgomery is the capital city of Alabama and one that is steeped in history. One of the main reasons people choose to visit Montgomery is the city’s ties to the civil rights movement. Montgomery is where, in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a public bus, an act that helped change history in the U.S. Montgomery was also the site of several other events related to the civil rights movement and there are many sites related to the movement, including Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where Martin Luther King Jr. was a pastor from 1954 to 1960, the Civil Rights Memorial, and the Rosa Parks Museum.
One of the other reasons many people visit Montgomery is the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. The professional regional theatre produces around ten productions each season and is ranked as one of the top 10 largest Shakespeare theatres in the world, drawing over 300,000 visitors annually.
Other worthwhile attractions in Montgomery include the Hank Williams Museum, which pays tribute to the iconic country music legend; Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, which holds an impressive collection of 19th and 20th century American paintings, Southern regional art, Old Master prints and decorative art; Old Alabama Town, six blocks in central Montgomery filled with 19th and 20th century homes and buildings; and the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
There are many accommodation options in Montgomery, from budget-friendly, to family-friendly, to luxury, to bed and breakfasts, depending on the type of trip and who is visiting. The city is also home to a diverse food scene featuring southern cuisine, as well as foods from all over the world.
Getting around the city is best done by public transport or rental car depending on your needs during the trip. The Montgomery Area Transit System is easy to navigate and serves a wide range of destinations across the city. Visit the tourist information centre to obtain a transit map.
The best way to get from the airport into the city is by taxi or car rental. Taxis are readily available outside of baggage claim, and there are several car rental counters at the airport. Many hotels also offer shuttle service from the airport so be sure to check with yours to see if they offer the service.
